Sustainability Children & Youth
It is the children and youth of today who will inherit the earth tomorrow. We need to engage them in all aspects of sustainable development—social, environmental and financial.
Giving individuals the opportunity to influence and participate in matters that affect them is necessary in a democracy. It is also necessary in order to engender enthusiasm and belief in their own abilities. If we are to achieve sustainable development, we must bring the children and youth with us in these efforts, both here and now and in preparation for what awaits us. That’s why this program is aimed at them. The program is divided into two areas: environment and social sustainability.
In this area, we focus primarily on projects that aim to arouse an appetite for knowledge and interest in the environment.
Many young people perceive environmental issues as something scary and outside their own sphere of influence, where melting glaciers, floods and endangered species dominate the media. Therefore, we wish to approach the subject in an enjoyable, exploratory and solution-oriented manner.
For younger children, we work exclusively with concrete, practical projects designed to build knowledge and encourage a closeness to and respect for nature. This can be done both in and outside of school.
For the slightly older, our work, and that of our partners, is above all about offering young people the knowledge and tools that will enable them to act in ways that contribute to a more sustainable world. Our motto Inspire to Act is a very important aspect here.
The social sustainability area is closely linked to Axfoundation’s diversity and integration activities, which were initiated in the autumn of 2014. We want to work with projects that focus on reducing isolation and increasing opportunities for young people to influence society. This is often associated with greater knowledge of the democratic process, the right to a good education and job opportunities.
Our partner organizations have extensive knowledge and experience with working with young people and know how to arouse enthusiasm and generate momentum. When you feel you can influence your life and situation, the future often looks brighter.
