The Inception of Biomimicry – Janine Benyus

Biomimicry is the concept that encompasses nature’s own innovative design and how it has developed during 3.8 billion years. Today we see biomimicry as an approach to innovation. When we seek sustainable solutions to human challenges, there is a chance to emulate nature’s time-tested patterns and strategies. Much made by nature is sustainable at its core.

Nature has time-tested it’s many solutions and we find the failures as fossils. What we can see and conceive in nature, are designs and innovations that holds true. We can embrace these principles in our endeavors to find sustainable solutions to the challenges of our time.

Janine Benyus is a biologist, author, innovation consultant and co-founder of the Biomimicry Institute. She popularized the concept of biomimicry in her 1997 book: Biomimicry – Innovation Inspired by Nature.

We met Janine Benyus in Stockholm during the 3rd Nobel Symposium on Global Sustainability. We asked her to explain how she discovered the concept of Biomimicry. The conversation also touched on Janine’s future project, a book about nature’s software—the “code”. Is there laws and forces that govern nature’s own “operating system”?   Please view the interview with Benyus here.
