Marks & Spencer publishes data on antiobiotics

2017-12-21

As the first supermarket chain in Britain, Marks & Spencer provides details about the use of antibiotics in its food chain, as a step towards reducing the use of vital human antiobiotics in livestock farming. Marks & Spencer publishes information about the quantities of antibiotics used on livestock by farmers who supply meat, eggs and dairy products to the chain.

The information will be regularly updated to show progress towards reducing the use of antibiotics, which are also prescribed to treat human diseases. Marks & Spencer’s ambitions exceeds industry-wide goals, especially with regard to chicken farms. In recent years, the use of antibiotics has been around 90% below the target for 2020, determined by the Responsible Use of Medicines in Agriculture Alliance.
